This summer has been an exciting time for our students! Graduate students Elvan Sahin and Joon Hyuck Moon completed internships at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), respectively, where they gained valuable experience in cutting-edge research.
Our undergraduate students also had a productive summer. Grace Enjik, George Walker, and Colin Smith interned at Duke Energy, Constellation Energy, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. We’re thrilled to announce that Grace will be joining the HEATS Lab this month as a Ph.D. student, focusing on small boiling water reactor instabilities.
George, a rising sophomore in nuclear engineering, gained hands-on experience in the Reactor Engineering department at the Braidwood nuclear power plant in Illinois. He remarked that his internship helped him “learn more about nuclear reactors and how we produce nuclear energy!”
Colin worked in Lisle, IL, for NRC Region III. During his internship, he visited numerous reactors in the Midwest and observed inspections. “This position aids in my learning of the rules and regulations surrounding nuclear power plants in the US. This position also gives me real experience being in nuclear power plants.”, he said.
We are also pleased to welcome Cole Dunbar as a new Ph.D. student, along with Charlie Erickson and Vinicius Monteiro as new M.Sc. students in our group.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates! We are expanding!
